The Antique Edwardian / Victorian
and art deco style furniture has been part of
the British colonial history for many years,
in particular the military campaign furniture.
Carpenters during the colonial rule built a
mixture of British style furniture, some with
an Asian influence. The majority of the furniture
was made from Teak wood. Over the years what
remains of these scarce and hard to find pieces
have filtered into surrounding Asian countries
from those previously colonized by the British
in a by gone era.

In Asia, the exploitation of
teak (Tectona Grandis) started during the colonial
Era.
During which period large mature trees grown
naturally over the decades were cut for furniture
manufacture.
Furniture of the 19th century, is rare. Produced
from superior quality older, larger, naturally
grown Teak trees with a tighter fiber. "modern
day Teak grown on plantations is of a much smaller
diameter 3 to 6 inches".
Teak is a tropical tree that grows slowly, thus
the fiber is very tight producing a heavy wood.
Teak, Rose Wood and Mahogany are all generally
high quality heavy woods.
1) They are-not liable to putrefaction (rot-proof)
2) Highly resistance to insects and mushrooms
3) Long lasting giving a strong end product
that will last many generations to come.

The lengthy old fashioned
drying process also promoted outstanding quality
in the wood. This In conjunction with the actual
age of the furniture, "circa 60 to 150
years old" ensures that the wood and joints
are well dried and stabilized. Thus the pieces
contain a very low moisture content minimizing
the possibility of warping or cracking even
when exported to colder drier climates such
as those in Europe or North America.

It is our work and passion
at "TOUCH WOOD" to find these old
pieces of furniture, refinish and restore them,
to bring out their natural beauty. They tend
to be uncovered engrained with dirt, dust and
heavy paints hiding the beauty the natural wood
grain. We refinish each of these rare one of
a kind pieces, while keeping its individual
unique character and history along with a reasonable
price tag to give best value that money can
buy.
In addition to our original authentic and restored
antique furniture, we handcraft our reproduction

from Old Teak houses, Horse carts & wheels,
un-reparable old furniture etc.

furniture department has developed through popular
demand which in some cases customers prefer
over the older styles and designs that may be
unsuitable or too large for some modern homes.
Hence we now also supply handmade reproduction
and contemporary Teak furniture built to last
and become the antiques of future generations,
as well as our original authentic antiques line.
